There was speculation last week that the chance of the Tunners managing to finish the meal that the Ferretts intended on serving up was at best unlikely. They had starved so far this year, the devastation of being stuck on the bottom of the table, after eating so well in 2008. It seemed that their appetite for a fight had left them; they looked scrawny, yet to have that sweet taste of victory. Well, the Ferretts must have dropped the plate on the way to the table as 161 was never going to be a big enough meal to stop the Tunners chewing all they served up. They were gaunt with hunger and after devouring the Ferretts easily, they now seem hungry for more. It was a massive upset with the Tunners overcoming all odds to knock off the Ferretts. Those Ferretts are not the team of last year, struggling to put together the massive scoring they were known for, famous for, hated for. They have been lucky so far, dodging several bullets including a draw against other cellar dweller Triple WWW 2 rounds ago. They have now tasted defeat, the dish they normally deliver to their opponents week after week. It seems the aura of the Ferretts is slowly disappearing and the Snowgummers now await. They are keen to eat well also and are looking to make the end of April the time when the once mighty Ferretts are taken off the finals menu.
The ‘gummers are in good form. Only the defending Premiers, the white hot Buglers have scored more and their consistent scoring will see them go into this Anzac Day clash favourites. It will be windy, it will be wet and it will be cold; it is a test that the Ferretts must try and overcome as the Snowgummers play in all conditions. They will not yield easily and this will tell us much about the long term chances of this Ferretts team. Their captain will be keen to lead by example, they will need him too.
Another who went into the weekend with a point to prove was the number 2 Draft pick Anthony Cecchi. Heavily favoured to go number 1 in the draft, he has watched on with envy as not only did Poposki steal his thunder to go first pick in the draft, he has inspired the Wanderers side to some massive early wins to set them in the top 2 heading into this match. He ended up with the Triple WWW side that has been lurching week to week, devoid of a win and seemingly, devoid of leadership. That changed after Cecchi lifted his side with an inspiring 43 points helping them to their first victory of the year. They thrashed the Wanderers and he was quick to seek out the Wanderers captain and star recruiter Kevin Rowbotham to unleash a barrage of severe sledging, no doubt reminding him of that fateful night at the Cambridge Draft.
The Wood Ducks did not need the draft to help them this week as they faced up to last year’s beaten grand finalists Wally World. It was to be a good test for them after reaching the top of the table early before slipping backwards the following week. Things were looking grim and another loss looked heading their way until the round of the year was turned in by their Charles Latrobe chance Rob Cook. An astounding 46 points tore the World apart with the Wood Ducks enjoying life back in the Top 4 again. They face the Tunners this week and will be favoured to win even with the Tunners showing a turn of form as mentioned earlier. It will be a match that will define the season of both, The Wood Ducks could be the real deal and the Tunners will need to continue to build their momentum, just as they did last year and ride it hard, all the way to the finals.
Finally the glare of the spotlight must now turn to 2 teams. One loves it and shone under this glare to eventually end up Premiers last year. The other however hates it. The Buglers again hit over 180 points in overcoming In Time Dynasty shutting bars all over Ireland. It is another amazing score and they sit with the extraordinary statistic of averaging better than 36 points per player 5 matches into the season. After their poor start to the season, they are hitting their straps and will grow into favouritism at this rate to go back to back this year. The Brothers in Arms will also feel the heat of that spotlight as they ended week 5 on top of the Premiership Table. Last year it happened but they melted quickly from that high post. They will need to accept the exposure that winning brings to them as only one will finish with the Premiership Cup and they must embrace the extra attention that will come their way if they eventually want to drink from it. It remains to be seen if they have the thirst for this or whether it will again be too much for them. Anzac Day seems the best day of the year for us to find out.....
