The Start of a New Season

‘The Buglers’ start their campaign for a record setting third premiership win and a place in Latrobe immortality, by taking on last years’ wooden spooners ‘F Troop’. In what seems a match dreamed up for some anti climatic B Grade Hollywood blockbuster, it may not be that easy for our Premiership Side after ‘F Troop’ helped themselves to plenty of quality food at the ‘Boags Classic Blonde Draft’ feast just 3 short weeks ago. The influx of talent to ‘F Troop’ from low markers PAGE, INNES and SPARVELIS should provide a great weekly platform for the enthusiasm that the rest of this not so consistent team can use to bounce a little higher this year. The question will be whether ‘F Troop’ will start jumping early in 2010 or will the Defending Premiers continue on their merry way again, towards that magnificent high that only they, as Latrobe’s only Premiership Side, have reached so far.
The team we all ‘love to hate’, the mighty ‘Ferretts’ also start their campaign off with a perceived soft run before hitting the highly fancied ‘Gummers’ side in Round 4. They play last years’ bottom 8 sides the ‘Tunners’ and the ‘Corruptibles’ in the first 2 rounds and then ‘In Time Dynasty’ in the third, a team that have had a gut wrenching summer of internal sledging with the captain gone, the teams heart and soul ripped out and the support of Ireland, now colder than the coming winter.
The Great Captain of the ‘Brothers in Arms’ will be keen to hit the ground running again. With LEVERINTON and CARRINGTON strengthening their first round opponents the ‘Tridents’, FAIRLESS will be in heavy motivation mode in an attempt to lift the sights of his TOP 4 side to the ultimate peak this year. He has dragged his team to the foot of the Grand Final Mountain too often not to dream of that last ascent to the top, but so far it has proved just too steep to climb. 2010 could be the year, however, every journey starts with that first step and the star studded ‘Tridents’ side will make sure that step needs to be taken by the 2010 Premiership Favourites, very very carefully.
The Cup Hunters will be singing their theme song, penned and performed by musical genius and draftee LEX TIER, loudly on the first tee however whether they continue the chorus post game is debatable. They run into the ‘Gummers’ side who couldn’t quite keep hold of their favouritism last year. They have the McCarthy duo, a red hot HOCKING and then enjoyed a magnificent hour at the draft table which saw young SERDENES, sledge immune DIVENCENZO and club C Grade LEGEND and the steal of the 2010 Draft DUNSTONE become ‘Gummers’. It is a formidable task that fronts the ‘Cup Hunters’ with a new captain and no sponsor.
HOWEVER THEY HAVE A SONG!!
Throughout the great battlegrounds of history, the sharp sound of bugles, the snapping precision of snare drums and the eerie majesty of bagpipes have forever lifted the spirits of men to greater heights. The extraordinary power of music has helped them find the nerve when all seemed lost, continue against insurmountable odds to heroic and brave victories. If the Cup Hunters are in full voice from a rousing victory at the end of Saturday, then LEX TIER may well be in the recording studio all next week, commissioned by other teams to find their own sound that enriches their team and invokes their spirit to help lift their side to the exhilaration of a glorious premiership win.
One thing is without doubt, for the 2010 draftees that make their trip to the club this weekend, Saturday golf at Latrobe is about to change forever. They will turn the corner into Farm Road and that road will seem to go forever. Their fingers will stiffen slightly around the well worn steering wheel and they will shift slightly in their seat. They will make their way through the grand archway formed by the towering gums that stand guard at Latrobe’s entrance and as the Clubhouse comes into view, their heart will skip a beat, their mouth will become dry, their breathing will shallow and they’ll fight a knotting in their stomach. The adrenaline that has been slowly building in their body on the drive to the Latrobe, shall start to surge. They know it is no longer just another game of golf that they are about to play, it is suddenly about more than just them. It is about representing the team that they have been chosen for. With those new team mates, they will meet a new challenge in golf. It is a team challenge that just maybe, bonded together, if everything goes right, will allow them to take that step to immortality, to be known forever more, around the glorious fairways of their wonderful club, that they are a Premiership Player at Latrobe. Magnificent!Good luck to all players and let the long journey to glory begin.....
