It took just one day for the pressure of the Latrobe Team Premiership to take effect. One a day of perfect weather, the suffocating tension of realizing that you played for more than just yourself wrapped its hands around the throats of first time players in every team. The scoring suffered accordingly and with the exception of a few old hands, the golf course was certainly the winner in Round 1.
The exceptions were:
Has there ever been a more dramatic entrance of a number 1 pick than Toby Wilcox’s heroics on the final hole. Carrying the burden of 2 time wooden spoon side F Troop, weighed down by the expectation of all, a curling downhill 15 foot putt was encountered on the final hole….. for victory. In a contrast that depicts the Premiership, as the ball met the bottom of the cup, the devastation that befell In Time Dynasty was balanced by the utter elation of the beleaguered F Troop side. In Time, a heavily favored side must now wait 2 weeks in the fog of defeat to get the chance to drag their season back on track, whilst the wooden spooners can enjoy the realization that they may this season become the force that takes them to the finals action in July.
The Ferretts are back!!! The arrogance that was loved by them and hated by all others in the first two seasons has returned and it is sure to smack all comers in the face this season. They are a good side; chock full of competitive juice and devoid of mercy. The normal close rivalry between them and the historically undefeatable Buglers side was a white wash, a thrashing that may just be a preview of the season to come. The Buglers need to find the glue that bound the group so tightly in the first 2 seasons. They were magnificent back then, a ruthless machine that slaughtered all in front of them. Well the machine that showed signs of rust last year seems to have all but broken down. It will need more than oil, it needs a complete overhaul and someone in that team must hit the phone and find out what petrol is required to get the motor of the Buglers up and running again.
The Premiership Clock had defending the Corruptibles at 12 0’clock and favored to go back to back. Reveling in their new found fame, they came out firing and hi the winners circle with a force that knocked the Wanderers into the next post code. A dominating performance saw them post the equal top score of the day and they are a confidence side that is full of confidence. It was as always a consistent team performance that history says, is the ideal formula to go a long way in Team Premiership golf. It remains to be seen if this will continue but there is nothing to suggest it will abate and suddenly Round 2 throws up F Troop in front of them. Last year’s Premiers against last year’s wooden spooners; after F Troops heart stopping victory in Round 1, loaded with 2 number 1 picks, this game suddenly has entered blockbuster status.
Finally, the Tunners moment of truth has come in Round 2. When the Tunners captain did not call out his Auntie’s name, there were eyebrows raised and a murmur rippled around the room. A nervous rebuttal from said Captain did little to quiet the storm….. Round 2 sees the Denise’s All Night Chemists play the Tunners. The world will be watching on with interest as we all know one thing is certain in life…
HELL HAS NO FURY LIKE A MATRIARCH SCORNED.
